KFC EL SALVADOR — TEXTURE, CONTRAST, AND BRAND RECOGNITION
This campaign was developed for KFC El Salvador under the creative direction of Carlos Bolaños Rodríguez, Regional Marketing Manager for Grupo Pirámide, one of the most influential restaurant operators in El Salvador and a key player in the country’s food service industry. Through its management of internationally recognized restaurant brands, Grupo Pirámide has contributed significantly to the modernization and growth of the Salvadoran quick-service restaurant sector, helping shape consumer expectations and dining culture across the region.
From the outset, the objective was clear: create imagery that aligned seamlessly with KFC’s global visual identity while remaining relevant to the local market. One of the greatest responsibilities when working with an iconic brand is understanding that the assignment goes far beyond photographing food. The challenge is to understand the visual language, brand equity, and emotional triggers that consumers already associate with the product.
Globally, KFC’s visual communication has long emphasized craveability through texture, contrast, freshness, and product authenticity. The brand’s imagery consistently celebrates the unmistakable crispiness of its chicken, the richness of its ingredients, and the sensory experience that consumers expect from every bite. Understanding these visual principles was essential to the success of the project.
The photographic approach centered around a hard-light, deep-shadow aesthetic that deliberately enhanced texture and dimensionality. Rather than using soft, diffused lighting, the decision was made to embrace directional light that could reveal every ridge, flake, and irregularity in the fried coating. The shadows were allowed to remain present and intentional, creating visual depth while reinforcing the perception of crunch and freshness. This lighting strategy transforms texture into the primary storytelling element of the image.
Every highlight on the breading was carefully controlled in-camera to maximize detail and create separation between layers of ingredients. The interplay of light and shadow helped communicate the product’s tactile qualities in a way that feels immediate and appetizing. The goal was not simply to show the product, but to allow viewers to almost hear the crunch through the photograph itself.
Achieving this result required a highly collaborative production process. Food Stylist Gabriela Palma played a critical role in preparing and maintaining the product’s visual integrity throughout the shoot, while designer Alex Membreno provided artistic support and post-production assistance. Together, the team focused on preserving authentic textures and ensuring that every visual decision reinforced the campaign’s objectives.
From a technical perspective, the images were designed to be completed primarily in-camera. Careful attention was given to lighting ratios, lens selection, product positioning, focus control, and highlight management during capture. By investing time in the creation of the image rather than relying on extensive digital manipulation afterward, the final photographs retained a level of authenticity that is often difficult to replicate in post-production. Retouching was intentionally kept to a minimum, serving only to refine and polish rather than reconstruct the product.
One of the reasons our team was selected for this assignment was our established photographic style and our ability to create visually striking imagery that emphasizes texture, depth, and realism. At the same time, this project demonstrates an equally important capability: the ability to adapt our creative approach to the strategic needs of a global brand. While every photographer develops a recognizable visual signature, successful commercial photography requires understanding when to lead creatively and when to support an existing brand language.
This campaign reflects that balance. The result is a series of images that remain faithful to KFC’s global visual identity while incorporating the technical precision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that define our work.
